LOCAL ‘FIGHTER TURNED FARMER’ STARS IN DOCUMENTARY PREMIERE AT BRIDPORT CINEMA
Jim Armstrong (the ‘star’)
“FIELDS OF EDEN”
(A Year in the Life of Longhorn Jim)
Thursday 19 June 7.30 pm
The Electric Palace Cinema in Bridport is screening the Premiere of a locally filmed documentary, which has been described by Channel 4 as working “beautifully at every level”. (Uden’s review on fourdocs)
“Fields of Eden” is the story of ‘fighter turned farmer’ Jim Armstrong. The film follows him throughout 2007 as he struggles to farm the traditional way – helping to raise a herd of rare longhorn cattle and dealing with his own new flock of sheep. In 1982, as a teenage recruit to the Navy, Jim fought in the Falklands War and, in this 25th anniversary year, the film features some tender and poignant moments as he revisits the ghosts of his past.
It is a fascinating insight into rural life and an uplifting portrait of a man who has come to terms with war and found peace in the beautiful West Dorset countryside. It was filmed in the Bride Valley by Bridport based film maker Clive Whaley of Cranbrook Films and has a soundtrack provided by local musicians, including the group Heron and Robert Lee.
Originally filmed in monthly episodes for the Channel 4 website ‘Fourdocs’, it has received praise from many quarters. Charlie Phillips, Editor of Fourdocs, described it as “a lovely tale of personal fulfilment and good green behaviour”. Patrick Uden, one of the UK’s most respected documentary producers and currently a consultant to the BBC’s The Apprentice, has said, “there are many lovely moments in this doc … it works beautifully at every level.”
The Premiere will be held at the Electric Palace on Thursday 19 June - doors open from 7pm. The evening will also feature an introduction by the film maker and an opportunity to meet Jim and a number of the characters that appear in the documentary. Tickets are available in advance and on the night for the usual film show prices (£5 and £6). There is no special dress code.
Warning: the film does contain one brief scene of animal slaughter.
